Hemlock Hill – at the Arnold Arboretum
- What is a system? (Think about the Solar
system and ecosystems. A system is a group of “players” that work together
in some way. If one player changes, then the whole system changes to
re-adjust.)
- Who are the long-time
key players on Hemlock Hill? (Before the arrival of the adelgid). Hemlock Hill is an ecosystem. Critters
include chickadees, nuthatches, and squirrels that eat the hemlock seeds.
There are Cooper's Hawks which prey on small birds.
- What are the different kinds of forests? There are coniferous
forests and deciduous forests (found in temperate zones on Earth). There
are rain forests, too. Most of the rain forests you’ve heard about are
tropical one. There are also temperate rain forests.
- What are the food chains like in the different kinds of forests? Check out Introduction
to Introduction
to Biomes.
- What is a tree? It parts, function of each part, and key
producer of oxygen. Life cycle.
- What is the difference between deciduous and coniferous trees?
- What is an eastern hemlock?
- What is a black birch?
- What is a beetle? Compare its body structure during each stage
of its life.
- What is the wooly adelgid?
- Where did the wooly adelgid come from?
- Will all the hemlocks die? – brings up ‘natural enemies and
defense/resistance’ and the introduction of the Chinese Hemlock.
