Moving water has power!

Part One: (look and discuss)
What is a canyon? A canyon is a deep valley with very steep sides, usually carved by a river.

Look at these pictures of canyons, and discuss with a partner what they all have in common:
  1. Grand Canyon (Arizona)
  2. Hells Canyon (Oregon/Idaho)
  3. Kings Canyon (California)

Part Two: (look and discuss)
Canyons are very different from other physical features you may be familiar with. To see this, look at the following photographs:
  1. National Geographic: Grand Canyon Photographs
  2. National Geographic Magazine: Mountains—Sherpas
  3. National Geographic Magazine: Great Plains—Change of Heartland (look at the area where the farmers are standing)

Learn more about plains: another word for it is prairie - look at these photos.

Part Three: (think and write)
Thinking about these photographs, decide on the best 2 differences between:

a. Mountains and plains

b. Canyons and mountains

c. Canyons and plains
